OHM Sponsoring a Concert to Collect for Holiday Toys for Kids.

One Hundred Mondays is happy to announce that we are partnering with Larry Dunn from Omaha to bring Toy Drive for Pine Ridge to Des Moines for the first time ever!

The Toy Drive for Pine Ridge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that collects and delivers toys for children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, and raises donations for heating, clothing, food, and educational resources for residents of the reservation.

The toy drive started in 2003 with Larry Dunn – an Omaha musician also known as Lash LaRue – a friend and a small pick-up truck. See how much this has grown at   http://www.toydriveforpineridge.com/

We do NOT consider this "charity".  In many ways "charity" from non-Natives is condescending and problematic for Native people.  We sought this out because Larry has a wonderful trusting relationship with community members in Pine Ridge built over many, many years.  Larry also has a great understanding of the complexity of reservation life and tribal issues.  There are no strings attached (aka evangelization), there are no publicity shots or PR work.  In simple terms, this is about a guy who is gathering toys for kids to make the holidays a little brighter, period. And we want to help him.

We hope you will consider supporting this cause.  The show will take place at the GAS LAMP on Saturday Dec. 7th.  This is an EARLY show.  Vago kicks the show off at 5pm, the One Hundred Mondays at 6pm, and King of Tramps close the show at 7pm.  It is an all-ages show!  Cover is $10 at the door OR a new, unopened present for a kid. ALL proceeds go to this great cause.

If you cannot attend but would still like to make a donation, email us at:  onehundredmondays@gmail.com and we'll figure it out.

We are also seeking business to donate raffle items for the show (or just cash donations)

In the meantime check these links and we'll see you on Dec 7th:

Shout-out to the Des Moines-based band, Crawford County, for a good deed!

There is no bigger local music fan/supporter/friend in Des Moines than Wendy Hull Coon.  She is known for her blog Wednesday's notes, attending more shows than anyone, and her awesome band photos.  One Hundred Mondays always appreciates her support and love to have her around when we play.

But last week at a show, some drunk chick accidentally broke Wendy's camera.  Wendy didn't have the means to buy a new camera.

OHM celebrating Wendy's birthday
We wanted to send a shout out to another Des Moines-based band Crawford County.  Last night they brought Wendy up on stage during their show, asked her how many shows she had seen this year (she has seen 230 local shows through June!!) and gave her some cash to get a new camera.  It was a class act.  And Wendy deserved it (and really appreciated it).  Here's to many, many more photos with an even better camera!

If you are in a "liking" mood, go to Wendy's blog, Wednesday's Notes and Crawford County FB page.

The 1930's tribute tunes

On our new EP "100" we recorded two songs that sound very different from the others.  Sioux Falls and Outlaw Hero are tributes to the recordings of the 1930s.

Most recorded music we hear today is done digitally.   Each instrument and vocal track is recorded with several microphones so the perfect sound can be caught at the most perfect angle.  The click of a button along with basic copy and paste features allows modern musicians to create thick layers of sound and even cover up mistakes.  It wasn’t always this way.

Not to long ago a musician who wanted to record had to have everything arranged before they could even think about recording.  The practice happened on the side not during recording as it is often done today.   Studio time was precious and expensive.  Studio musicians as well as producers were all on the clock and all on the band leaders dime.  Because of the time and expense involved many early recordings had to be done in just a few takes.

The most early jazz and blues recording were often done with one microphone and done on the spot to capture the intimate sound of the moment.  These early recordings left the musicians very exposed but also provided a very intimate sound that let listeners here every detail and scratch that was in the room during the recording.  If you listen closely to these early recordings you can hear the shuffle of fingertips across the guitar strings and even the drag of a cigarette being smoked during recording.

As a tribute to these inspiring and influential early recordings we have included two tracks recorded live with one microphone.  We hoped to capture the same raw yet intimate sound that is often lost in most modern recordings.
